Love Is: Selfless
John 3:16 - “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
As you are gathering from all my other posts about what love is, God is love. Therefore, God should be our example of love. He should be the one we look to when trying to understand the depth of what love is. If we look to our friends relationships, or even our parents for the perfect example of love, we will always be disappointed. It wasn’t until I started studying God’s word that I started to understand the true meaning of love. That is not to say I have always gotten it right, but I am able to love not only myself but my spouse, my family & my friends in the healthiest version I have ever loved because of the example God has modeled for me.
Growing up my view of love was very selfish. My mindset was always, “what can they do for me.” I have heard parents argue “you never do xyz for me.” The earthly love I experienced was conditional & had ultimatums. That is why we cannot look to anyone, except God for our model of love.
Love is selfless. As you know, God gave His only son so that we, sinners, could have eternal life. A perfect example of selfless love. We live in a very selfish generation. Everyone is looking out for themselves. Which leads me to believe that this kind of selfless love is not very common, and it definitely does not come from us. It comes from the Holy Spirit! God is the the one who gives us the desire and ability to feel for others & model out love the way He did for us. This is why we must be in the word & be in relationship with God!
I think showing selfless love is one of the best ways to let others see God’s light shine through you. The Bible reads in John 15:13, “Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.”
